  • Summary

The two-week Glasgow COP26 summit was ended on 13 November 2021 where ‘Glasgow Climate Pact’, agreed by nearly 200 countries, stating that alarming and utmost concern that human activities have already caused around 1.1°C of warming and that impacts are already being felt in every region. It also states that rapid, deep and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions, including reducing global carbon dioxide emissions by 45% by 2030 relative to the 2010 level.

Besides, countries have made several commitments during COP26 and are expected to accelerate the development, deployment and dissemination of technologies, and the adoption of policies, to transition towards low-emission energy systems, including by rapidly scaling up the deployment of clean power generation and energy efficiency measures, including accelerating efforts towards the phase-down of unabated coal power and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, recognising the need for support towards a just transition. 

In this webinar co-organised by BDO and the HKMA Global Centre for ESG Education and Research, we will explore on the above and cover the following:

  • An overview of the commitments made by the countries at COP26;
  • The implications of these commitments on businesses;
  • Use of green finance to scale up investments in renewable and sustainable energy;
  • Role of an escrow agent plays in green project initiatives; and  
  • Carbon life cycle assessment and carbon neutral technology

ARTIE NG, Director of Global Centre for ESG Education and Research, Hong Kong Management Association

Dr Artie Ng is currently director with the Global Centre for ESG Education and Research at the Hong Kong Management Association. He is a fellow member with both HKICPA and CIMA (UK). He obtained his PhD degree from the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow. Dr Ng serves in the editorial boards of Accounting Forum, International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, as well as Social and Environmental Accountability Journal. With a research interest in sustainability, he has published over 100 publications, including referred journals, edited books, conference papers and consultancy reports. Dr Ng is an International Associate of the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research (CSEAR) at the University of St Andrews (UK).

DOROTHY PAK, Director and Head of Business Services & Outsourcing, BDO

Dorothy Pak is BDO's Director and Head of Business Services & Outsourcing. 

Dorothy heads the firm's outsourcing division and leads engagements in accounting, statutory accounts preparation, payroll, HR administrative support and expatriate services.

Dorothy has over 30 years of experience in accounting and other business process outsourcing services. Her portfolio of clients include multinational corporations, SFC regulated companies as well as small-to-medium sized companies which are in diverse industries, including information technology, general trading, retailing, investment and property holding, and non-profit making bodies.   

Dorothy is a Hong Kong Certified Public Accountant and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.


RICKY CHENG, Director and Head of Risk Advisory, BDO

Ricky Cheng is BDO's Director and Head of Risk Advisory, with major responsibility in the area of risk advisory services. He specialises in assisting clients in managing their internal audit function and meeting corporate governance requirements in both China and Hong Kong.

Ricky has 20 years of risk and assurance experience. He worked for large international accounting firms and had commercial internal audit experience. His expertise covers various services such as Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance, risk management assessment, compliance assistance, corporate governance compliance review, internal audit assistance, business process review, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) readiness and reporting support services review, stored value facilities (SVF) licence independent assessment review, etc. 

The portfolio of clients managed by Ricky comes from various industries including transportation, property development and construction, gaming and entertainment, hospitality, manufacturing, gold and minerals mining, fast moving consumer goods, retailing and department chain stores, financial institutions such as brokerage houses and derivative products companies. 

Ricky is a frequent event speaker of related topics for professional body organisations and training for listed and non-listed companies. He is a Committee Member of ACCA Hong Kong (2011-2013), Training committee member of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors (since 2013), Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and Certified Internal Auditor.
 

JOHN HO, Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Ltd

Mr Ho is an Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary of The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Ltd and holds directorships in various subsidiaries of the Group. He is also an Executive Director and the Company Secretary of Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited and a director of Shenzhen Gas Corporation Ltd. and Foran Energy Group Co., Ltd., all of which are listed public companies. Mr Ho is the Vice Chairman of the General Committee of the Chamber of Hong Kong Listed Companies and the Vice Chairman of the Taxation Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and was appointed as a member of the Accountancy Training Board of the Vocational Training Council on 1 April 2021. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors. Mr Ho graduated from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom with an honorable Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in Economics and Social Studies (Accounting and Finance). He completed the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in the United States, the Senior Executive Program offered by Harvard Business School, Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management and China Europe International Business School, and the Chief Executive Program from Singapore Institute of Management. Mr Ho has over 42 years of experience in accounting, corporate finance and investments.

 

WILLIAM YU, CEO, World Green Organisation

Dr William Yu is Chief Executive Officer of World Green Organisation (WGO). Dr Yu is an energy economist and climate professional by training and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge as well as earned an Executive MBA degree from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in the US. Additionally, He has gained valuable regional management experience by working at US multinationals. Dr Yu is currently the Adjunct Professor of the City University of Hong Kong and the Honorary Corporate Adjunct Professor of the Shanghai University.

Currently, Dr Yu is the Task Force Member (Green Business; Digital Economy) of The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Business Advisory Council (EBAC) of United Nations. He sits on the Energy Advisory Committee and the sub-committee on Food Reduction Good Practices in Institutions and Commercial and Industrial Establishments, Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign under the Environment Bureau, Hong Kong SAR Government. Dr Yu is also a Steering Committee Member of FOOD-CO​ of the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund. He sits in the working group of Sustainability Charter, Hong Kong and Malmo, Sweden​, and is a member of the expert panel on Industry Standards and Research under The Hong Kong Green Building Council. Dr Yu belongs to the Air Quality Objectives Review Working Group - Energy and Power Generation Sub-group of Environmental Protection Department.

Dr Yu has served as Board of Director of Hong Kong Institute of Social Impact Analyst. He also serves as Assessor Chair in Green Healthy & Creative Living Stream, The Hong Kong ICT Awards, OGCIO, HK SAR Government. Dr William Yu is the former Head of the Climate Programme at WWF-Hong Kong and responsible for leading both public and business engagement programmes. He writes articles for multiple newspapers on the low carbon economy, low carbon city, social innovation and energy poverty. He was a co-host for an environmental program on numerous TV and Radio Channels.
